My own personal philosophy of supervision as an Accredited Play Therapist is based upon the training that I have undertaken to become a Supervisor, personal therapy and actual experience of providing supervision. I believe that my role as a Clinical Supervisor is to build a relationship with the supervisee, empowering them to confidently conduct clinical work to the best of their ability. I aim to assist practitioners in the development of their skills, knowledge and professional values. I acknowledge that supervision is a process, not a technique and that it is mutually important to be congruent, authentic, honest, empathic, and respectful within a safe and open environment.
As a Supervisor I strive to be clinically competent and knowledgeable and I do this through continued professional development which I believe enhances my ability to link theory to practice. I aim to encourage practitioners to reflect on their clinical work in order to become more aware of their clients’ individual processes and to build on their own self-awareness. I encourage self-care and respond to, challenge and guide situations that might be impacting upon a practitioner’s clinical practise. I will discuss and explore possible actions whilst giving clear and constructive feedback. I can also offer creative methods of looking at clinical work involving mediums from the Play therapy tool kit. I also work within PTUK’S ethical framework and regulatory standards.
I believe that it’s very important to be clear about the role of a Supervisor and the expectations of the Supervisee. This is why I feel that an initial meeting is advantageous and is a good opportunity to clarify expectations on both sides, ask questions and gather information. This meeting provides an opportunity to discuss how best we can work together and clarify this further into a Supervisory contract. The Supervisory contract offers clear boundaries about the Supervision process and the responsibilities on both sides which creates safety for both parties. I intend for the supervisee to receive value from supervision and believe that a professional working alliance is built upon transparency. It is important to me that a potential Supervisee feels comfortable with myself and with the Supervisory contract.
I can offer supervision to trainee and qualified practitioners. Trainees are required to have one hour of supervision for every six hours of client work undertaken and a minimum of 1.5 hours per month for qualified practitioners.
